The Origins of the Paper Bag
By Rena

Long ago, many years before hoop skirts were the style, ladies were desperate for a cheap, pretty fashion. Wherever they looked, everyone was wearing animal skins. The feminine members of the human race were starved for something pretty.

One day, a wise inventor spent night after night in his cave, working without a pause to eat or sleep. Finally, he held up what the world had been waiting for: A new fashion of hat!

It was brown, of an easy-to-acquire material, and easily kept on the head with a rubber band. People loved them!

But one day, a fancy young lady was coming home from the store when she saw—gasp! She had forgotten to bring her purse to put her groceries in! She fought to keep control as panic threatened to overwhelm her, but she couldn’t resist throwing back her head and screaming, “Noooo!” However, when she flung back her head, her hat flew off. She picked it up and was about to put it back on when she realized it was the right shape and size for her groceries. So she placed them inside and walked home, explaining her discovery to curious onlookers on the way.

The idea caught on, and soon everyone was using their hats for groceries. People agreed, not only was this idea very practical, but it also looked much less ridiculous. And so, the paper bag was invented. We still use them for both uses today, although adults don’t usually have the desire to place the bags on their heads. However, if you so choose to follow that long-ago fashion, please do not use a plastic bag, as it may suddenly cause your life processes to cease functioning.
